Selecting The Best Natural & Organic Baby Laundry Detergent

The endless task of doing laundry. While some enjoy it and others do not, it is bound to become a frequent chore when you become a parent. Between spit up, diaper accidents, food stains, and the unavoidable trip in the dirt, there always seems to be a load waiting to be laundered. As you wash away the mess, it is best to avoid the addition of harmful chemicals. This can be done by using natural or organic baby laundry detergent with each wash.

Why choose natural or organic baby laundry detergent

The biggest reason to select a natural or organic baby laundry detergent is that all day, every day your baby’s skin touches clothes, blankets, toys, and other items that have been washed. Even when items are thoroughly rinsed, laundry detergents are known for leaving behind particles. As clean clothes are worn, or as blankets and other items used, these particles can be absorbed into the skin. Also, babies and children will sometimes suck on blankets, shirtsleeves, and other laundered items meaning that not only can laundry detergent residue be absorbed, but ingested as well.

The chemicals used in most laundry detergents are what makes the possible absorption and digestion of residue such a concern. Some chemicals used are known to cause skin or eye irritation while others are potential carcinogens. Natural and organic baby laundry detergents can help lower the health risk.

Additionally, the law does not require the listing of all ingredients on the labels of laundry detergent. This is due to the protection of trade secrets. Due to this, it is difficult to determine if your store’s selection is using harmful chemicals. Product packaging that shows the organic seal can only contain organic ingredients. This makes organic products the safest choice with natural, plant based detergents second best.

How to select a natural or organic baby laundry detergent

As mentioned above, the listing of all laundry detergent ingredients is optional. Even when components are provided, it can be hard to confirm if it is the complete list.

In 2008, a study done by the University of Washington tested six top leading laundry detergents. The study found that all six detergents contained at least one chemical regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws*. Unfortunately, the study did not include the names of the detergents.

While this information can feel discouraging, we offer three suggestions to help you select a natural or organic laundry detergent.

First, narrow your list to the brand lines that only sell natural and organic products. Brands that sell a mix of natural and non-natural products are more likely to include unlisted, harmful chemicals.

Second, avoid any products that have fragrance. Often, fragrances are due to the addition of synthetic ingredients and are known to be an irritant to skin and eyes.

Third, review your list of brands against third party studies. For example, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit that tests and ranks consumer goods based on their ingredients. The goal of the rankings is to help customers make better-purchasing choices. Click here to see their findings on laundry detergents.
